U18s secure hard fought but well deserved victory at Wigtownshire

EK had a long journey to Wigtownshire (Stranraer)on Sunday but came away with the league points. They faced a strong running Wigtownshire side, and the task was made more difficult as EK were unable to use their forward advantage to the full due to uncontested scrums.

Both sides traded penalties before Wigtownshire scored from their own half when an EK attack broke down. Score 8-3.

Despite several opportunities, EK failed to score until 5 minutes before the break when, after a 30 metre drive from a line out, Kenny White went over from a ruck on the Wigtown line. Jordan Green converted to give EK a 10-8 lead at the break.

With the wind at their backs in the second half, EK were again on the front foot and only some good Wigtownshire tackling prevented further scoring. However, halfway through the second half, a fine move involving most of the EK team, which started from inside the EK half saw Scott Aitken go over. Green got the conversion. 17-8 for EK.

Wigtownshire soon struck back, however, with a converted try from their strong running wing. Score 17–15 for EK.

With 10 minutes to go, EK again extended their lead when scrum half White went over for his second try from a 5 metre scrum, which was awarded when EK were held up on the Wigtown line. Green capped his fine all round performance by converting the try, albeit with the aid of the cross bar. Score 24-15 for EK.

Shortly afterm EK were reduced to 14 men when winger Conner Martin was injured in a tackle. However EK continued to dominate through the strong running of Bonamy, Cunningham, Beaton and captain Alex Irvine.

But with the match seemingly won, EK again lost a breakaway try when pressing in the opposition 22, scored by Wigtown under the posts and converted. This set up a rather nervous final two minutes but EK managed to close out the match to win 24-22.
