The joint Under 18 EK/Cambuslang side had a cup quarter final replay on Saturday against their Glasgow Hawks counterparts, after the first match had to be abandoned due to a snow blizzard in East Kilbride.
Playing “downhill”, Hawks had the bulk of play and scored three tries to forge a deserved 17-3 half time lead. The home side found it difficult to get out of their half, and lacked cohesion in the forwards which limited the supply of ball secured.
Ross Hynde, aka Beans, got the home points through a penalty.
Hawks got an early score in the second half to make it 22-3 and it looked difficult for the home side to get back in the tie. However from a line out drive, they conjured a good score, touched down, I think, by Eddie Beaton.
This gave the hosts more spirit and confidence. That said, they only just stopped Hawks scoring another try through a flying cover tackle in the right corner by Beans. But Hawks scored again, and converted it to give them a 29-8 lead.
But not discouraged by this, EK/Cambus struck back through another Beaton try from a five yard penalty charge. Score: 29-13. This prompted a period of pressure in the Hawks 22 metre area leading ultimately to a third try for young Master Beaton. Score 29-20.
Overall, the better team won. EK/Cambus had some big forwards but much of their play was individual, lacking in cohesion. But they showed excellent spirit to keep plugging away. Just a pity Hawks had built such a lead in the first half.
