Uddingston's visit to EK got off to a rather ominous start as they had to travel with a depleted squad and had to ‘borrow’ two EK boys to make a game of it. Calum Rae and Jack Hammond did the decent thing and helped out Uddingston for the first half, relishing the opportunity to run at their erstwhile team mates for a change.
Alas, Uddingston's temporary new recruits' efforts were to no avail as some powerful running from Robert Clarkson and Ryan Fennesey allowed EK to put their opponents on the back foot from early on. Scores soon followed, with both these players picking up tries. Other tries came from Scott Murphy, Gregor Banford and Aaron Harrington - Aaron's try was blistering, he picked the ball up in his own half and evaded the Uddingston defence through sheer pace to finish under the posts.
The second half saw Calum Rae and Jack Hammond returning to more familiar colours, with Andrew Ferguson and Gregor Banford switching allegiance. Banford continued his hard running for Uddingston but some good defence, in particular by Jack Hammond, kept him out.
Big Lewis Donnelly found himself in unfamiliar territory when he came on as cover in the backs, though this did not deter him as he finished a strong run with a touchdown to take EK even further ahead. Further tries came from Ryan Fennesey and Robert Clarkson as Uddingston failed to deal with EK's line breaks.
There was some good marshalling of his backs by Dylan Brodie, while Douglas Cassidy put another great display in at centre. Nick O’Neil showed some glimpses of the talent we know he possesses and - if he can be more consistent – he will turn into a quality number 9. Again there was some great work by the EK pack with Kieron Boles, Eddie Beaton, Daniel Love and Ben Walters fearless as ever in their tackling.
Everyone in the East Kilbride side put in great effort but they still need to work on securing ball at the break down if they are to compete with some of the other teams in their league. All in all, a good day for the EK youngsters who look forward to seeing Uddingston again in a few weeks when they visit them for an end of season tournament.
