The 2nds continued their winning form with a handsome victory at Cartha Queens Park (CQP) overwhelming their hosts by 80-0. They scored 12 tries on a heavy, in parts almost boggy pitch.
The main competition of the day was which Blackwood brother could notch the most conversions. Old man Alasdair won, claiming 6 kicks, while young Bert had a shocking afternoon, kicking only 4 out of 5 attempts, albeit the 2nd half tries were largely scored in the corners and he did convert some cracking kicks.
Player of the day was centre Ian (watch that knee!) Brown who had a hat trick. When he did not run round the opposition, he ran over them or through them. A great sight.
It was pretty much one way traffic throughout, although CQP stuck to the task as best they could. The first try was scored by Gary (Yo Yo) Thornton who has decided he prefers EK to Hamilton once more. Let’s hope he stays long enough to put down some roots this time! Ally Blackwood got the conversion.
The next score was almost immediate. From a guddle following a high EK kick, the referee ignored young David Rosie picking the ball up from an offside position and linking with No 9 Fraser Little who scored under the posts. AB converted.
Two further tries by David Rosie and young Craig Ferguson followed before the best try of the day. Ian Brown got the ball about 35 metres out and blasted his way through and round the opposition for his first try. AB missed his first conversion of the day. Score: 33-0.
Tries by D Rosie and Quinny rounded off the half at 45-0, with Ally Blackwood having kicked 6 conversions (admittedly all in front of the posts).
The substitutes bench was emptied at half time. Reports suggested they were all trying to escape coach Marriott telling them about his new nose. Glen Neilson, Alex Irvine, Ross Stewart, Sam Azoala, Dan Trampenau, Callum (Bert) Blackwood and Andy Kampman evaded Mr Marriott. John Sinclair also came on about 15 minutes later, to play on the right wing,
Further tries were scored by Ian Brown (another cracker, with some assistance from his team mates), Andy Kampman, Ian Brown (again), Bert Blackwood (on a crash ball from 7 yards – this time he managed to catch the ball, which helps) and finally a third try for David (I’ll buy the vodka) Rosie after a devastating burst for some 30 metres by English Dan Trampenau who decided he should not run any further, despite the large EK support urging him on.
Bert Blackwood needs to go back to “conversion school” as he only kicked 4 conversions, being too out of puff after his 7 yard burst for his own try to convert it.
