EK 2s had a resounding win over Irvine 2s - with 11 tries - to conclude their league campaign. Champions!!

EK 2s concluded their championship winning season with a romp in the sun against Irvine 2s. On a dark November Friday night, when these two teams last met, reputedly Irvine played a goodly number of their 1st XV. This would seem to account for the points swing from a 56-5 loss to yesterday’s 73-21 win.

It has been a fantastic season for the 2s. They have scored 884 points, conceding 234 for a points differential of 650. They have scored four tries or more (earning a bonus point) 17 times out of 20. They have a backline with both pace and youth (yes, we don’t count Calum Blackwood in either category, lol), and they have two excellent kickers – Calum B & Patrick Quigg.

Yesterday’s match was played in decent weather, and the pitch was dry. Just what they wanted for the finale. And they delivered with 11 tries and 8 conversions, six for Bert Blackwood and two for Patrick Quigg.

Lazarus Quigg came off his death bed to play, seeking two conversions to claim 100 points for the season (two tries, all the rest kicks) – he succeeded.

And as I am typing this report (Sunday afternoon), he has just turned up at my house (for yet another free dinner!) carrying – with immense and justified pride – the 2nd XV’s Player’s Player of the Year Tankard. What a fantastic year Mr Quigg. He would have scored pots more points this season had Calum Blackwood not been such a greedy kicker lol.

It was 40-7 for EK at half time. Try scorers were: James Mackinnon, Roddy Beaton, Duk (Court Prosecutor) MacDonald, Calum Aitken, Gary Thornton (after fending off or running through at least five opponents) and arguably one of the best tries of the day, Scott Johnston – a cross kick which he caught in the air in the 38th minute and galloped a full 22 metres to score in the fortieth minute!

Quigg had two conversions and Blackwood three. Irvine scored one try through Robbie McVie in the 32nd minute, converted by Craig Williams.

Those of you who are mathematicians will have worked out that EK scored 33 points in the second half. Try scorers were: Dylan (long strider) Brodie, Andy Proctor, Roddy Beaton, James Mackinnon and finally Roddy Beaton from long distance. Bert had four conversions.

For the record, Irvin
