Manager Michael Reekie was a desperate man on Thursday evening, as he tried to round up sufficient bodies to field a team. It was touch and go but, aided by some veterans rousing themselves from their slumbers, he managed it.
EK notched three tries, by Nathan (Gorgeous?!) Ross, Steve Lannon and old man Richard "Titch" Beaton. No bets placed whether the EK News match report will dwell on his achievement.
Thank goodness you all know better than to believe what you read in a newspaper (if the EK News counts as such).
EK led 12-3 at half time, with Bert Blackwood claining one conversion. It then went to 12-10 as Helensburgh scored a converted try.
The game then got a tad messy. David Bell, resuming after a dislocated should incurred the wrath of the referee, as did Gordon Blackwood. So down to 13 men, EK managed to close the game and emerge winners 19-16. Blackwood notching another conversion.
This victory means that EK might just still escape relegation. With 7 matches still to play, they need to win at least three of them. It will be tight but let's hope the players are motivated by today's win and turn up for training determined to fight to the end.
