EK could only admire the resources available to their opponents, Dumfries. They had a strong playing squad and additional players to choose from in the event of need, all of whom go training regularly.
There was nothing spectacular about any of their players but they played as a team and understood rugby. Some of the EK players are on a steep learning curve, and a few are playing out of position to ensure EK can field a side.
It was 14-0 at half time and 43-0 at full time. EK stuck to the task but need to reflect on their tactics.
Rather than trying to run the ball from deep, it would seem more sensible to kick for position and try to gather some points once they have established themselves in the opponents half.
EK's best players were: Chris O'Neil playing out of position at full back (one observer felt that he was a better full back than flanker, although the observer is a dog eared forward not noted for his own fluent back skills).
Other notable contributions came from the Kampman boys, particularly Andrew Kampman who was playing at No 8. Special mention is also due to Calum Hastie, a prop playing out of position on the wing, and Chris Quinn, a flanker who was propping.
However, it would be better for Chris and the team next week if he did not prop up the bar before next week's match! It's a wee bit scary if he think that there not enough time for a drink after the match ......
Next week, EK are playing Whitecraigs 2nds at Torrance House, in the final fixture of the first half of the league. With Whitecraigs 1st flying high in National 1, this will be a hard game for EK. We need everyone at training to try to build greater fluency and understanding.
Kick off 2 pm. Two home matches again. Good for the sports club finances!
