Our 2nds have not had a match since 12 November, away to Annan, so it was a tad ambitious of Bruce Beggans, one of the 2nd team managers to try to arrange two games on the same day for the 2nd team pool.
The weather - flooded pitches at Garnock put paid to one of the games so it was all eyes on Kilmarnock where EK were meant to play their 3rds. However, both the 1st and 2nd XV matches for K'nock were postponed so it seems EK ended up playing the Killie 2nds.
So it was a great achievement to come away with a win. Two tries, by Daniel McQueen and Kenny McDermott(dare I ask if either has paid their memberships?)with one conversion by Calum (I have paid, Bert) Blackwood were the only scores of the day.
My sources tell me that EK played against the wind (in both halves?) and also it seems a referee whose son was playing for the opposition. So at least he had one friend (or at least a relative) at both the start and end of the match.
Kilmarnock 2nds are in the RBS West 1 league, a number of Divisions above EK, where they are currently lying second in the league table, so this underlines the result. But perhaps to provide a more realistic perspective, our 2nds should really be playing the teams in this league on a regular basis.
Man of the match: Bruce Beggans for his organisational contribution.
But all credit to the boys who turned out on a horrible day. The team was:
Euan Perry, Daniel McQueen, Scott Aitken, Andy Kampman, Glen Neilson, Stevie Lannon, JB Timmons, Johnnie Watson, Calum Blackwood, Scott Johnston, Alex Irvine, Bruce Beggans (Captain), Calum Hastie, Kenny McDermott, Gordon Stevenson. Subs: Eddie Beaton, Kieran Boles, Chris Quinn.
Next week the 2s play Dumfries 3rds at home in a rare league fixture. Kick off 2pm.
