In what was described as a "must win" game for both East Kilbride (EK) and Annan it was the visitors that finished the day on top.
Annan opened the scoring with a penalty 3 minutes into the game. East Kilbride (EK) responded 3 minutes later with one of their own converted by Craig MacKenzie. 2 minutes later EK conceded the first of three tries when, when a kick ahead was not followed up and the Annan player who received the ball broke through a series of tackle attempts to score under the posts. A further converted try and a penalty gave Annan a 17 point lead to take into the half time break.
EK fought back in the second half with an unconverted try from Caleb Welch and a try from Evan Martin converted by Craig MacKenzie. This was not, however, enough as Annan added to their total with two penalty conversions.
This was a bad day for a struggling EK team. The scrum, which has been dominant in past weeks, was under pressure throughout the game, kicking was poor, with the exception of a 50-22 secured from the boot of Mark Ellison who, unfortunately, was forced to leave the field early with an ankle injury, and while some tackled well too many tackle attempts failed to bring the ball carrier to ground. EK's player of the match, for his ball carrying and general work in defence is Ben Walters.
This was, indeed, a bad day for an EK side weakened by call offs and, as the injury tally increases, the lack of depth in the squad can only make the situation worse. With no game next Saturday (10th October) players and coaches will have some time to rebuild and rebuilding is most certainly required if the club is not to sink to it's lowest league position since the 1974/1975 season when EK's promotion from Glasgow and District League Division 2 took them to a higher division and started a run that saw the club attain Scottish Premier League Division 2.
The next game at Torrance House Arena will be on Saturday October 17th when the visitors will be Dalziel RFC, Kick Off 2 p.m.
