Disappointment for East Kilbride

On a bright, sunny, warm day In Greenock, the kind of day when players and spectators alike look forward to open, running rugby it was the home side that made the most of conditions to record a victory and 5 league points.

Greenock Wanderers (GW) opened the scoring 15 minutes into the game with an unconverted try. East Kilbride (EK) responded five minutes later when a catch and drive from a line-out yielded a try scored by Ben McLean and converted by Grant Dryburgh. EK were not to score again in the half while GW added two more tries, both converted, the first of which came 25 minutes into the half and the second on the stroke of half-time.

EK went into the second half of the game knowing they had a lot to do to get back in front, but it was the home side that showed greater determination and was rewarded with a fourth converted try after 10 minutes. This gave them the try bonus point and with that in the bank when awarded kickable penalties they chose to take the points by converting two to bring their points tally for the day to 32. EK, however, scored the last try of the day when when Evan Middleton touched down following an excellent break up the left wing. The try was unconverted giving a final score of GW 32, EK 12.

On a day when both teams were looking for a result which would lift them further away from second to bottom of the division it was the home side that was celebrating after 80 minutes of hard rugby and EK that left disappointed. It was, as might have been expected, a hard fought contest during which each team had 3 players dispatched to the sin bin (not all at the same time!) EK's set piece scrum was solid and dominated through most of the game but must have been disappointed not to see a scrum infringement penalty awarded to them while two were awarded to the opposition, the latter of which came as EK were driving GW towards their own line and looking for a push over score. The line-out faltered early in the game but came together later. GW, however, used some clever running and kicking to pin EK in their own half, and for this they deserved their victory. EK player of the match? - Grant Dryburgh who covered well at full-back and made some telling runs into the GW half of the field.

EK's next game is scheduled for Torrance House on April 4th when Lenzie will be the visitors. However, Lenzie is still in the SRU Shield and if they beat Dalziel next Saturday that fixture will be postponed until May 9th. On April 11th Carrick will be the visitors to Torrance House.
