East Kilbride 7 Lenzie 35

Alasdair Offin5 Apr - 09:30

Some good play from East Kilbride was not enough to overcome a Lenzie side aiming for promotion.

On a cold, wet day East Kilbride (EK) kicked off and were quickly on the back foot as Lenzie opened their account with a converted try in the first 5 minutes of the game. EK were defending again as the visitor's ran and handled well in defiance of the difficult conditions. Their reward for this style of rugby paid off 20 minutes into the half when they touched down again to bring the score to 0-14. EK then spent some time in Lenzie's half of the field helped by some uncharacteristic mishandling of the high ball by Lenzie and much improved scrummaging. Attacks on the opposition line inspired hope but, unfortunately, did not produce the needed scores. As the half wound down towards its conclusion Lenzie launched a final attack which was repelled by stout defence.

The second half opened brightly for EK. A strong run from Ross McKeown took the game to within 5 metres of the Lenzie line. EK used the position to good effect and were rewarded when Alastair Marriott touched down for a try converted by Grant Dryburgh. Lenzie's reaction was swift. They assaulted the EK line and were rewarded when one of their bulky forwards barged over to give them a score which, with the conversion, returned their lead to 14 points. From this point forward it was EK that did most of the attacking. Having gained two penalties in a scrum that they were now dominating they looked well set to put some points on the board, but it was not to be. Having chosen to take a third set scrum, in preference to either a penalty conversion or a kick to touch, it was EK that was penalised giving Lenzie an easy exit. EK took the game back to Lenzie but a mistake in mid-field was hacked ahead by the opposition. The ball was gathered and the Lenzie try scorer had an easy run into the in goal area. One mistake then led to another. A chip ahead from within their own 22 handed the ball back to Lenzie who took full advantage of this gift to run in their 5th try of the afternoon. Lenzie's kicker, who was enjoying a 100% success rate made no mistake with the conversion to make the final score EK 7, Lenzie 35.

Once again this was a game in which EK played well in parts and were in contention for a significant period, particularly in the second half. Scrum and line-out were both executed well and they might have regarded themselves as unlucky to have been awarded only three penalties at the set piece. The main difference between the sides was in the back division where Lenzie coped much more effectively with the difficult conditions and used effective running and the boot to put pressure on EK. For EK many players put in a good turn and it was pleasing to see Eddie Beaton back in EK colours making some telling runs into opposition territory. EK player of the match - for his sound play in difficult conditions this week's EK player of the match is the young no.9, Matthew McGill.

Next week Carrick will be the visitors to Torrance House. Like Lenzie they are in the hunt for the single promotion spot so EK will have to produce a top class performance to see them off. The kick off for this, the last game of the 2025-2026 season will be at 3 p.m.
