Great win at a wet and blustery Torrance House.

East Kilbride 62 – Oban Lorne 5
On a typically wet and blustery Torrance House day Oban kicked off. The kick off fell short of the 10 metre line giving EK the put in at the first scrum of the afternoon.
During the first 10 minutes of the half neither side had a significant advantage but this changed when from a line out on the visitors’ 5 metre line EK took and drove for the first try claimed by Rian Anderson. Calum Blackwood converted. Two minutes later Eddie Beaton broke up-field to give Craig Ferguson a scoring opportunity which he did not eschew. No conversion this time but with confidence increasing the East Kilbride XV was dominant. Tries began to flow; Robbie Greenfield crossed 15 minutes into the half, Calum Simpson scored after 23 minutes, Paul Rosie after 28 and Eddie Beaton after 35. 3 of these 4 tries were converted by Calum Blackwood. Calum Simpson’s try followed a break by Alasdair Dalgleish. To parody the late Bill McLaren “with the ball in his hands he saw the Gobi Desert open up in front of him”. Unfortunately, with the line in sight, a pulled hamstring (didn’t know forwards had hamstrings but that’s modern rugby for you!)saw Ally tumbling to the deck but not before passing the ball to Calum who had an easy run in.
With 38 points to their credit and try bonus secured EK were securely in the driving seat when the second half began but it was Oban that drew first blood after 10 minutes when, following a succession of penalties against EK, they moved the ball from a tapped penalty kick to their scrum half who was in the open. The conversion failed and from this point on EK’s domination of the game resumed. Paul Rosie crossed for his second after 14 minutes of the half, Roddy Beaton scored 5 minutes later and Calum Simpson claimed his second after 28 minutes. He crossed the line again a couple of minutes later only to have it disallowed as the referee adjudged a pass earlier in the move as forward. With three minutes of the game remaining Scott Shankie, playing at no. 8 this week, picked up from the back of a set piece and ran in to score under the posts. Calum Blackwood converted two of the four second half tries.
The game ended with an Oban attack on the EK line but when the ball was turned over Calum Simpson broke out only to be stopped a few metres short of the Oban line.
This was a good performance. Strong winds and a wet, heavy pitch were adversities that had to be dealt with and the EK XV’s handling and support play were both commendable. In spite of the strong wind Rian Anderson hit the jumper more often than not. EK dominated the scrum and was successful in spoiling the Oban line out on their throw in. Quite a number of players performed strongly. Connor Wilson made a first appearance off the bench, Alex Irvine’s game has improved as the season has progressed and the back line as a whole is showing more fluency than they were earlier in the season. 2018 has started well. Promotion to the national leagues would depend not only on a continuation of this form but also on the three teams ahead of EK at this stage having a serious downturn in their fortunes. What is really needed now is a continuation of this form to the end of this season and throughout the next.
Man of the match: There were many contenders but for his bursting runs and hard work in the less glamourous areas of the game this week’s man of the match is Eddie Beaton.
Next Saturday, 3rd February, the team travels to Maybole to play current league leaders, Carrick for what will be a tough encounter. The Kick Off is at 3 p.m.
